Ficquette, Flemings, New Independence and Reams road work, plus SR 429 widening plans in Horizon West. Live closures: FL511. Road problems: 311.

Last checked Oct. 8, 2026. This page is updated weekly. Project facts come from Orange County’s transportation projects pages, its January 2026 Horizon West roads update and the Central Florida Expressway Authority.

Horizon West’s roads belong to three agencies. Orange County Public Works builds and maintains the local roads, the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) runs the SR 429 toll road, and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) handles state highways such as U.S. 192 at the southern edge. For live closures, use FL511 or dial 511. Report a pothole, a broken signal or a road hazard on a county road to Orange County 311.

Projects under way

Flemings Road extension, segments 5 and 6. Construction is under way to turn Flemings Road from a two-lane rural road into a four-lane divided road, with a 10-foot multiuse path on the north side and a sidewalk on the south side. It will connect to Sawgrass Bay Boulevard at the Lake County line, and the work includes the County Road 545/Flemings Road/Western Way intersection. The county expects to finish in early 2027.

New Independence Parkway extension. Crews are building about 1 mile of new four-lane road from the existing parkway east of County Road 545 (Avalon Road) to Wellness Way at the Lake County border, with 10-foot multiuse paths on both sides. Expected completion: early 2027.

Ficquette Road widening. The county is widening about 1.8 miles of Ficquette Road from south of Inglenook Drive to south of Summerlake Park Boulevard, from two lanes to four with a grassed median. The plan, from the county’s Ficquette Road project page:

  • Straighten the S-curve and build a roundabout at Ficquette Road, Reams Road and Summerlake Park Boulevard.
  • Improve the intersections at Old Thicket Trace, New Independence Parkway and the Deputy Scott Pine Community Park entrance.
  • Add a multiuse path on the west side, a 5-foot sidewalk on the east side, lighting and landscaping.

The county said construction would begin in 2026 and take about two years. Expect lane shifts on Ficquette Road while it is under way.

Why so much work

Orange County adopted the Horizon West plan in 1995, and many of the area’s main roads still follow old rural alignments, the county’s Transportation Planning Division said in January. Several of the current projects are being built with developers under public-private agreements.

State roads and toll roads

  • SR 429 (Daniel Webster Western Beltway) is a CFX toll road. Construction alerts are on the CFX SR 429 page.
  • U.S. 192, Interstate 4 and other state highways are FDOT District Five roads; its project site is cflroads.com.

What this means for you
